Alpacas stand about 36” at the withers, and weigh approximately 125-150 lbs for females and 160 –200 lbs for males.  Alpacas are about 1/3 the size of llamas.  They are gentle and very curious.  They can easily be halter trained.

They have one baby a year which is called a cria.  Their gestation is 11 1/2 months.  Alpacas normally birth in the morning to early afternoon and seldom require intervention.  Infant mortality is very low, and they are normally up and nursing within 30 minutes.

Alpacas graze in the pasture.  Depending on the pasture quality, you can graze approximately 5-7 alpacas per acre.  Their soft padded feet are gentle on the pastures and they cut the grass rather than pulling it up out of the ground.

Alpacas do not challenge a fence.  Fencing is used to separate pastures and to keep predators like coyotes and roaming dogs from getting in.

They have a very efficient digestive system and only require a small about of feed a day in addition to their hay.

Alpacas are shorn one a year and their luxurious, hypoallergenic fiber is used to create garments or home décor items.  Most people can wear alpaca next to their skin even if they are allergic to wool.

There are many financial benefits to owning alpacas.  Depending on your personal financial situation and goals, alpacas can be used as a tax shelter or as an income producing business.
