Financial Considerations

It has been stated that returns of 30 to 74% are not uncommon in the alpaca industry.  How is that possible?

Consider the demand for female alpacas.  It takes a year to create a cria.  Alpacas have single births.  It’s typical to assume that there is a 50/50 chance of a girl.  When bred correctly, that female will be a higher quality than the dam.

Breeders and investors want female alpacas.

There are approximately 4,000 alpaca breeders in the U.S.  Consider that 74% of them (based on a national survey) are in the growth and building phase of their business.  And that is only part of the demand for alpacas.  There are investors who are considering alpacas as an alternative to the stock market and new farms starting up every day.

Why?

Uncle Sam now provides great tax benefits:

· Typically, an alpaca can be depreciated over a 5-year period or 20% per year.

· Beginning in 2006, Section 179 of the tax code allows for the deduction of a capital asset up to $108,000 in the first year the asset is acquired.

· Capital gains can be available on the sale of breeding stock and their offspring.

· Business expenses are deductible.

PLUS, alpacas are 100% insurable!

Ask your tax professional for specifics and how this relates to your personal financial situation.

Due to supply and demand, it is common for a female cria to sell for the same amount or even more than the original price of the dam!
